Gavin Brown’s enterprise
620 Greenwich Street
New York, NY 10014

General Store of Milwaukee in association with Gavin Brown's enterprise is pleased to present Drunk vs. Stoned 2 opening on Thursday, August 4 at 6pm.

A co-production of Gavin Brown's enterprise and the General Store of Milwaukee, Drunk vs. Stoned 2, opens Thursday, August 4, 2005. Special closing event, with screening of Drugs a film program curated by Carsten Holler, will be held on September 7 at 7 pm at the gallery. All are welcome to attend.

In this group show spanning several generations, the relationship between art and these two most familiar forms of intoxicated transcendence is examined through a clouded lens, blurred by pot smoke and beer goggles. Drunk vs. Stoned 2 continues to monitor the effects of these two altered mind states, to determine what promise, if any, they may still hold in relation to making and thinking about art. The artist as a self-conscious and deliberate thinker is recast as shamanistic meta-physician, alone in the studio in a state of primal creative ecstasy. The unconscious processes of the artist that exist outside of language, those moments of rare chance, and accident that lead to discovery or disaster, are celebrated here in the second installation of this ongoing project. The exhibition will included existing works by: Thomas Bayrle, Pedro Bell, Anne Collier, Bruce Conner, Martin Creed, Robert Crumb, Jeremy Deller, Mike Kelley, Martin Kippenberger, Yayoi Kusama, Adam McEwen, Henri Michaux, Richard Prince, Pruitt & Early, Charles Ray, Jim Shaw, Steven Shearer. It will also include new works made for Drunk vs. Stoned 2 by: Edgar Bryan, Dearraindrop, Jason Fox, Rachel Harrison, Mary Heilmann, Evan Holloway, Chris Johanson, Nick Lowe, Sarah Lucas, Abel McHone, Paul Noble, Elizabeth Peyton, Monique Prieto, Rebecca Warren, Franz West. And many more. Mike Kelley’s work will be on view at GBE @ Passerby, located on 436 West 15th Street.

Beyond novice level sub-cultural decadence, drunk and stoned can be seen as metaphors for two different approaches to making work. In this show, the lowered inhibitions and impulsive decisions of "drunk" stand in stark contrast to the heightened sensitivity and methodical meandering of "stoned." In
addition to historical works that touch on the theme, new works have been created specifically for this show.

Annexed to the main gallery, through swinging doors, is an old-time saloon where one can wet their whistle throughout the run of the show and take in a wide range of photography, while a house jug band plunks away at the opening.

On September 7 a Drunk vs. Stoned soccer match will be held at Chelsea Waterside Park on 23 Street (at 11th Ave), featuring hand-picked artist athletes types wear custom designed jerseys and officiating will be provided by Piotr Uklanski.

In the upstairs space at 620A Greenwich Street, two painter brothers Scott and Tyson Reeder are being held captive for a month long residency. The brothers will be making work in different media during their stay, which will be unveiled September 10. This new project space will also be home to a series of events throughout the show, beginning with roof top screenings of The Rebel starring Tony Hancock and videos by Kenneth Anger on August 24, stoned drawing party held on August 27, followed by a 24 hour super jam on September 3

Drunk vs. Stoned is curated by Elysia Borowy-Reeder, Gavin Brown, Corinna Durland, Scott Reeder, and Tyson Reeder.

Gavin Brown's enterprise hours are Tuesday to Friday from 12 pm to 6pm. Mondays by appointment. For a complete list of artists and digital pictures please contact Emanuela at intern@gavinbrown.biz.
